Bambara statue, Mali, wood
H: 14,6 in
Early 20th century, ex-collection B.Fraissine (Rodez)
Statue of ritual altar linked to Bamana. Perhaps called the Jirimooni statue, linked to the cult of Jo, the initiation society. This angular style statue represents a female figure seated on a stool. The legs serve as the front feet of the stool. The style suggests a provenance from the Bougouni region (southern Mali). The object is authentic, it must date from the middle of the 20th century.
