Shango Yoruba Nigeria Scepter, Wood
Description
Shango Yoruba Nigeria Scepter, Wood
H: 12 in
Scepter carried by a priest of the cult of Shango, god of thunder. Shango is symbolized by the double-edged Neolithic ax resting on the head of a female figure, in maternity, with two children. The cubic and abstract treatment of children, just symbolized by their heads, is particularly interesting and unusual. No restoration.
Early 20th century, ex-collection Terrier (Paris) and C.Rolley collection (Paris).
