Exhibition “Akwaaba – Welcome in the art of Ghana”

Akwaaba literally means ‘Welcome’ in the Akan cultural group (Ghana and Ivory Coast). The Ashanti and Fanti peoples of Ghana also use this term to refer to fertility dolls commissioned by women who wish to have children (Akuaba).
This exhibition invites you to discover a wide variety of ritual, ethnographic and artistic objects from the Akan cultural area, which mainly populates Ghana. We have selected royal objects covered in gold, fishing boat flags (Asafo), ritual terracotta pottery and a large selection of combs and Akuaba dolls. We will also be showing sculptures from the Ewe and Ada groups (found in Ghana and Togo) as well as statues from neighbouring groups in Ivory Coast (Agni and Atye).
Finally, we will complete this cultural immersion with a comparison with other works from West Africa.
The exhibition will open on Thursday 16 October and run until Saturday 22 November.
